From Mill to Pub: The History of Doyle's Pub

Doyle's Pub boasts a rich history, rooted in the very foundations of Richmond, Illinois. The building that houses the pub was originally constructed in 1844 by Charles Cotting and William Purdy as the Richmond Mill. This makes it the third oldest standing structure in the town, a testament to its enduring presence. Local lore has it that Richmond itself earned its name through a rather spirited competition: a race to the top of the newly built mill. The victor of this daring climb was granted the honor of naming the fledgling settlement, hence "Richmond."

However, the mill's story isn't without its trials. In 1925, a devastating fire partially consumed the building, leaving its future uncertain.

The structure was eventually repurposed into a restaurant in the 1960s, marking a new chapter in its history. The following decades saw a period of transition, with four different owners between 1968 and 1994, during which time the building sat vacant for several years.

In November 1994, Jeanne Doyle stepped in, breathing new life into the historic space and establishing Doyle's Pub. Jeanne has been the dedicated owner and operator ever since, nurturing the pub into the beloved local institution it is today.

A significant milestone arrived in April 2009 when Doyle's underwent an extensive seven-week renovation, transforming both its interior and exterior. This ambitious project resulted in a beautiful, fully wrapped, covered deck, providing ample outdoor dining space. The upstairs dining area was expanded, a new handcrafted bar was installed, and the restrooms were modernized and enlarged. This revitalization also saw a refresh of the menu, introducing new dishes that quickly became customer favorites.

Jeanne's commitment to quality and homemade goodness is evident in every aspect of Doyle's. You'll often find her in the kitchen early in the morning, preparing homemade soups, sauces, chili, salad dressings, and crafting the daily specials. Her dedication to fresh ingredients is particularly evident in the slow-roasted corned beef, the foundation of one of the finest Reubens in the area, and in the preparation of their award-winning Hot Wings. Recent additions to the menu, such as Mama's comforting Pot Roast and the flavorful Murph's Mussels, have also become instant hits with patrons.

Today, Doyle's Pub stands as a welcoming and family-friendly establishment, embracing the local community, including the area's motorcycle enthusiasts (riders). It retains the charm of a traditional Irish pub, offering a warm and inviting atmosphere where guests can enjoy homemade food, top-quality Irish beers such as Guinness, Smithwick's, and Harp, among others, and create lasting memories. It's a place where history and hospitality intertwine, making Doyle's more than just a pub—it's a Richmond landmark.
